Whitehaven to Sunderland, England

After getting sidetracked by cows and a post office, we must get back to the ride as soon as possible. It's the final day. Day three. Apart from a long and arduous climb out of Allenheads and another pretty terrible struggle up a bumpy track, Sunday's ride to Sunderland was plain sailing. In fact, most of it was on a disused railway line that gradually sloped downwards. Just what we needed of two days of steep upwards. As we approached the east coast things became much more industrialised. The valleys, cottages and cattle were replaced by burnt-out cars, broken glass and graffiti. I quite liked the contrast. Darren got a puncture about half a mile from the shoreline at Sunderland, the third we had in total, but apart from that, the finish was a little bit of an anticlimax. Like I said before, no dancing girls in bikinis, no people dressed up in bear costumes, no marching bands. Photos were taken with our wheels dipped in the North Sea and then it was back to the car park. The end. Was that brief enough?

If you'd like to have a go, it's well worth the effort. You can contact me if you think I might know something you might want to know. Have a look at the very useful C2C website for loads of information about the route, accommodation etc. Shave your legs, grease your saddle and hit the road.

This photo was taken at the top of a particularly nasty incline. The two blokes had parked their car, got out and leaned against the gate. It seemed that they were enjoying an afternoon of watching knackered cyclists struggle up a hill. They were also more than happy to have their photo taken. I was really excited to see this one when the film came back from the developers, but somehow it lacks something. Oh well.
