Number 6 in a series of photos from the Coast to Coast bicycle ride
Whitehaven to Sunderland, England

This is my kind of local post office/shop. No 24-hour opening, no buy-two-get-one-free special deals, no expensive television adverts, no online shopping, no finance and insurance packages, no celebrity endorsements, no frills. The only problem is that all this adds up to no customers. Or not very many. They're all down the road at the out-of-town superstore.

I love the window display. Those four bottles of orange squash on the top shelf will have the punters knocking the door down on monday morning. A clock, a letterbox, a little stack of household cleaning goods. The unobtrusive red sign reads, 'Tea and Coffee, Pies and Sandwiches To Take Out.' I'm pretty sure we're not talking about a crayfish and avocado on rye with a double organic Columbian latte. But then what's wrong with a cheese and tomato sandwich and nice cup of tea to wash it down? I know what I'd prefer.

I've done a quick search and found that you can stay at the Garrigill Post Office Guest House. Perhaps you could visit.

If you'd like to vote for me at the Photoblog Awards then just follow this link. I'm not sure what it's all about. The awards, I mean.
