Well, we're here. Orford Ness. Have you been before? No? Listen carefully to the nice lady tell us a thing or two about the place and then we'll have a wander round.

'Orford Ness is a unique place. On the coast of Suffolk in Eastern England, it is a ten mile long vegetated shingle spit, with an area of marsh and also lagoons and waterways. Since before the first world war there has been a military presence, and secret testing facilities have been present for most of this time. Due to the usual British love of secrecy and the remote location along with the strange nature of some of the experimental procedures undertaken here, many legends have grown up about this place. Much of what went on at Orford Ness is still secret! The area contains potentially dangerous buildings and materials so please to stick to the paths and follow the signs. The green route isn't open at the moment as we have owls nesting in one of the barns. Last ferry back is at 4pm, so please don't be late.'

She was nice. Where do you think she came from? Belgium? She had a funny accent, didn't she? You think Holland? We'll ask her later if she's about. Ok then, I'll read a bit from the guidebook as we walk round. But I don't want to bore you so we'll wait five minutes before I bombard you with facts. Feel free to ask me any questions.

On another note, it appears I upset some people by not choosing them as the 'name the woman on Southwold beach' competition. Threatening emails, telephone calls in the middle of the night and a severed pig's head on my pillow are not going to scare me. The judges decision is final. Susan from jojofoto was the winner and nothing will make me change my mind.
