![]() RAF air raid shelter, Clifton Airfield, York April 18, 2007 Number 14 in series of images that remind me of my childhood Taken the other Sunday, on an early morning walk near my parents house I got my feet and my dad's bike very muddy in order to get this photo. The ground was sodden due to most of it being ridge and furrow. In medieval times, the ridges and furrows formed because, over the years, ploughing and hoeing caused the soil to be drawn up into ridges on which crops were grown. Anyway, enough of history, when we were kids we used to mess around in these old RAF air raid shelters. Don't think medieval. Think dead sheep, beer cans, porn magazines and bonfires. This shelter was part of the former Clifton Airfield, last used in the Berlin Airlift in the late 1940's. The bit we used to lark around on as kids is now covered in houses, offices and a Tesco's, but quite a large chunk remains untouched. They wanted to build on this bit too, but there were objections and it was finally turned into a nature reserve. Well that's the end of the journey through the distorted plastic lens that is my memory. If you've got a few seconds to spare, click here to view the rest of the 'reminds me of my childhood' series.
