![]() disused baseball field, raf upper heyford, oxfordshire, england March 07, 2007 Out on my bike the other weekend I cycled through RAF Upper Heyford. From what I can gather, it was a fairly small Royal Air Force base until the start of the Cold War. The US then decided that they needed to base themselves in Oxfordshire, England so they poured lots of concrete over the grass, built runways, aircraft hangars, houses, shops, bowling alleys and supermarkets. Turning a chunk of England into America. Then they brought in some massive planes, loaded then with massive bombs and pointed them all at Russia. And waited. By the early 90's, the base had for the main part been wound down. Some bits survive, office space, car storage etc, but for the most part it's all closed up. Very eerie indeed. Although I'd been through it before, I'd never taken a camera. So ignoring all the rusting 'Secret Military Base' signs, I wandered around a bit and took a few photos. I shall be going back this weekend, in disguise of course. Sunglasses and a long mac. If I don't post next week it's because I've been arrested and am being interrogated. Guantanamo Bay here I come. Remember folks, everything I do – I do it for you. Holga CGFN + Fujifilm Superia 400 © James Arnold 2007 Comment (15) | Permalink |
