![]() goalposts and a packet of fags January 21, 2007 Number 1 in series of images that remind me of my childhood Taken the other Sunday, on an early morning walk near my parents house John Foster was the most popular boy in my year at primary school. He had straight black hair and supported Manchester United. When I was about ten years old, he came round for me, with a group of other boys and asked if I wanted to go out with them on my bike. I was quite surprised as I wasn't a member of his usual gang, but I was pleased he'd asked me and said that I'd go along. We ended up on the field. Someone produced a packet of fags, it was David Winters I think. Wanting them to like me, but too scared to smoke, I said I would stand guard and look out for approaching adults. They went off into the trees behind this goalpost and left me with the bikes. After about ten minutes of coughing, laughing and nervous glances, they walked back over to where I was standing. We left the field and cycled home our separate ways. This was also where my football career started. I used to play for the local cub team; a team for eight to ten year olds. Serious lack of skill with the ball meant that my football career ended here too. Holga CGFN + Kodak 400TX – taken on B setting by mistake © James Arnold 2007 Comment (6) | Permalink |
