![]() lily on a bench January 08, 2007 Just before Christmas, Lily had a school project to research and present a piece of work about a motte and bailey castle. We looked on the internet and found loads of information, but it seemed too easy and rather pointless to just copy information from the screen on to paper. So on chilly Saturday morning we set off in the car on the twenty minute drive to Deddington Castle. Originally built in the 11th century by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, half-brother to William the Conqueror it was abandoned in the 1500's. No tourist information, no battle reconstructions, no gift shop; the castle is now little more than a raised mound of turf and an extensive (8 acres) enclosure. We breathed in the cold morning air, wandered about in the footsteps of nearly a thousand years of history and took a few pictures. Lily's homework made a lot more sense when we got home.
